D. Gray-Man ficlet: Counting Sheep

I wrote something that wasn't Hagaren! Will you look at that? Sometimes I'm astounded at my own spirit of adventure.

Title: Counting Sheep
Author: bob_fish
Characters: Lavi, Krory and implicitly, Allen
Rating: G
Word count: 393
Setting: D. Gray-Man, during the sea journey to Edo
Summary: Sleep: it looks easy enough when other people do it.
Notes: written from two prompts from my flist. became_fire asked for Lavi and Allen, smut or gen, enemytosleep asked for "Lavi thinks about Allen late one night on Anita's ship (slash or not, up to you)". Slash or not? Up to you. XD
Disclaimer: Not mine. All hail the Great Cow! Hail her even though this is not an FMA fic.

You wouldn't think to look at him, but Krory really snored.

Lavi stared at the dim outlines of the wooden ceiling and tiredly, crabbily ran through a list of amusing ways to stop people snoring. He could stick things (corks? bits of cloth? Krory's bangs?) up Krory's nostrils. That could be funny, but Krory was kind of difficult to sneak up on, even asleep. He could ping Tettsui across the room to poke Krory awake, and see if he could get it back before he realised. That one was probably out too, the guy had crazy vampire reflexes. Bucket of cold water? Not original enough. He could put on a girly falsetto and whisper in Krory's ear, "Oh, Arystar, do stop" - no, that was just a low blow. Or he could just shove his own headband into his ears and attempt to think of more charming people and places. Maybe, although he never trusted his own powers of concentration.

Abruptly, Krory snorted and turned over.

The silence was delicious. Lavi exhaled hugely, blowing his bangs up over his face, and then turned around a couple of times, curled himself in the blanket in his hammock, and prepared to get an excellent night's sleep.

An hour later, he was still wide awake.

For the first few minutes, he blamed Krory and cycled through a series of new and insulting nicknames for him (it said a lot about his increasing exhaustion that the best one was "Toothy"). For the next few, he attempted to distract himself with idle sexual fantasies, and to try to stop people he worked with popping into them. But when, this - his number-one long journey, can't sleep go-to solution - failed, he had to admit to himself what he was really doing.

He was stewing. Again. He really wasn't supposed to do that. Taking an interest in people, excellent. Liking people, fine. Baiting people, better than fine. Caring for people, not ideal. Missing people, worrying over them, grieving them - he was absolutely not supposed to be doing that. Panda would probably be more enraged to catch him crying over someone than schtupping them. Not that either of these things were any of the old man's beeswax, but - well.

Sometimes, late at night, Lavi entertained the possibility that he was going to make a really crap Bookman.

Lavi, I think you're going to make a crappy Bookman too. But that's what makes you so awesome. Did you read my theory about the Heart of the Innocence? Let me know once you've reached there (you are close) so we can discuss.

Yes, me too (obviously). Bookmen ≠ glompers. Is your theory that Lavi's the Heart because - well, he's a glomper? His whole window-smashing scene was epic. And his rescue of Lenalee (although it kind of cuts into her moment of awesome there) - does he have a wee little thing for her or what? Oh, and btw that new jacket is totally cut to show off his butt.

Re: Lavi as the Heart, and also Kanda theories that has since been completely jossed.

That would be super-cool! Personally, I can see them jumping for Lenalee as the Heart so far. But I think I'd like Lavi better. BTW I cheated and read the latest chapter and now know Kanda's sekrit backstory. But how does this joss your theory that he's into guys? I THINK IT DOES NOT, ACTUALLY.

There is speculation re Lenalee & the Heart and later other characters, then once the anime runs out the manga keeps going and there is another development and yeah. I think you will still agree with my Lavi theory.

Oh, I was referring to how it josses my Japanese ex-patriot theory...he was never in Japan. XD I think he could still be gay, but it's up in the air for now.

Oh, yes, the one where he's hundreds of years old? I did notice how this means he's not actually Japanese ... but he still likes the food? And yes, of course he could still be gay as a hat. GAY FOR LAVI. And Allen. And possibly straight for Lenalee.

RE Kanda: he's listed as Japanese in his official character bios, and she draws him in her Asian style like she does Komui, Lenalee and Bak-chan...so I wonder if they just used Japanese DNA? Did experiments on Japanese refugees? Will we ever truly find out? and I like the idea that he could be persuaded wither way, though I guess that would mean convincing him he has the human ability to be attracted and lustful, etc.

Well, he has the human ability to get spitting mad at the drop of a hat, so why not? Besides, we all know that when a fictional character gets intensely irritated with someone on a regular basis it MEANZ SEXYTIEMS.

Oh, and I'm counting him as Japanese 'cause I like the cool samurai thing he has going on.

Oh I see and understand this. I can just see Kanda being thick-headed and feeling above these emotions (he makes some fun comments re: dying and having to be human).

There is also that. XD

That just means he needs to get jumped. XD

I love Lavi <3 Not seen the anime yet, I've been reading the mannga the last couple of years and am up to ch 149 as that's all that's been published in the UK ¬_¬ 3 month gaps between volumes :(

I like his ideas for teasing Krory, I think I would have gone with trying to put things up his nose :D And agree that he will be a rubbish Bookman, he's definitely too cuddly!

I love Lavi too! Who doesn't love Lavi? Frankly, I don't trust people who don't love Lavi.

I think things up his nose is probably the best one too, but Krory is pretty badass by this point in the manga when his blood's up (so to speak), so it might not be an entirely sensible idea.

This is true, but I think Lavi would manage to charm his way out of Krory's bad books pretty quick. Everyone does love him after all as you said, and if they don't then they're clearly akuma and dead inside.

Hee, probably so, and Krory is pretty easy to get around with cunning. I think Lavi's a bit nervous of the whole neck thing, though.

Love for the Allen/Lavi icon. I can't quite decide who to ship Lavi with. He's like ketchup, he kind of goes with everything. XD

Jan. 8th, 2010 09:08 pm (UTC)
He really does XD Allen tends to get shipped with Kanda a lot more (I'm not such a fan personally) but Lavi gets shared around quite a lot - I've seen him paired with everyone from Lenalee and Kanda to Miranda and Komui.

I was trying to persuade one of my friends that Kanda and Jerry would make a great pair, I was even going to attempt to write something for the pairing at one point. Maybe as we are semi snowed in it's a good time to ressurect this idea XD

Ha, amusingly enough, my buddy enemytosleep got into D. Gray-Man entirely via a filthy piece of Kanda/Allen fanart by jojo_kun posted on her comm art_up_lies. Then she later sent the same piece of filth to me to get me into D. Gray-Man, and it worked. Imagine our surprise when it was not actually yaoi porn. XD

You can imagine why I went straight to the Kanda/Allen, but I'm more amused now by Kanda/Lavi. I'm agnostic about Kanda/Jerry but maybe you should persuade us all by writing fic on a snow day?

I got my friend into D.Gray-Man purely by spamming her with pictures of Lavi :D

As for the Kanda/Jerry, it came about when we were trying to think up the most stupid pairings - Johnny & Krory, Rouvelier & 65 etc. Considering some of the ridiculous reasons people make up to pair characters together, I decided there's no reaon why they can't be together either. It would be total crack if I did write it, I'll see what I can do...

He does love Jerry's cooking (and remember the omake where Jerry dresses him and the others up in frilly aprons and forces them to work in the kitchen?).

I just read that one and was super-amused at him and Komui becoming instant girly bff! And Krory was in for asking him if he was gay. Oh, Krory, you really have spent your life under a rock.

Yes Lavi, you're far too attached to be a good bookman I'm afraid. I feel sorry for you, really. I do.

and you should have just taken your chances with Krory's reflexes and kicked him one
bob_fish

Ha, that would have definitely been funnier - but the prompt called for pensive so he had to spend most of the fic ruling out more entertaining things to do than angst.

I was bored the other day and actually came close to making an icon with Krory crying and your new slogan "Twilight: ruining vampires for the rest of us."

hahaha that would have been so amusing. Got thru the second disc of the anime. This is one that if I had the time I would do with subtitles (I'm usually multitasking and can't do that). While the actors can act, their voices don't fit and are incredibly grating

The japanese VA's are SO MUCH BETTER. I purchased a pirated version of the entire series where the person who wrote the subtitles obviously spoke English as a second language, and it was still a far more pleasant experience than watching it in English.

there are subtitles on these but if i have them on then i can't do the 100 other things i do while in front of the tv. It's a dilemna. Still it's better than Fruits Basket. Those English VA's are so awful it must be watched in Japanese.
